What is a Butyl Seal Tape? Here's Everything You Need to Know!

If you are looking for a reliable, heavy-duty adhesive that does quick repairs in a jiffy, nothing beats the flexibility and strength of butyl tape. It does an excellent job providing a mess-free and air-tight sealing for RVs, windows, boats, glass, and even as an EDPM Rubber Roof Patching.

USES OF BUTYL SEAL TAPE

  • Household: Given the waterproof and advanced adhesive properties of butyl tape, it’s ideal to be applied to areas wherein leakage and corrosion from humidity are common such as underground pipes and joints. It can also be used in ventilation systems, water pipes insulation, roofing repairs, dust removal equipment, and a lot more. If you own a car, it’s also a good idea to bring a roll of butyl tape with you. Leaks in your car engine can happen anytime, and just a strip or two of butyl tape can seal it in a matter of minutes.

  • RVs: If you are the type person who is fond of DYI-ing everything in your RV, butyl tape is your best friend. While a normal putty tape is relatively more affordable as compared to butyl tape, spending a few more bucks with the latter is an investment already since this tape is much more pliable, easier to work with, and it doesn’t dry and oozes out messily as compared to regular putty tapes.

  • Window Sealing: Some people prefer to use butyl tape to seal their windows and doors as compared to sealants. Why, you might ask? The answer is simple: butyl tapes are easier to manage and work with. It is also conformable, which makes it easy to install on windows and frames with irregular curvatures.

  • Vehicles: Vehicle owners will understand that unexpected leaks can happen - and sometimes, it happens at the wrong time! Having a roll of butyl tape with you can actually provide you peace of mind while driving as it has the ability to do quick emergency repairs. With a butyl tape, you can use it to fill gaps on a car firewall and as a gasket between vibrating panels.
  •

    SURFACE COMPATIBILITY

Butyl Tapes, undeniably, can be considered as an all-in-one solution due to its many application uses. In addition, it is also compatible with these surfaces:

    • Rubber roofing
    • Glass
    • Wood
    • Plastic
    • Aluminum
    • Galvanized Metal

HOW TO PROPERLY INSTALL BUTYL TAPE

Like any other adhesives, ensuring proper installation process is highly essential if you want to fully utilize the strength of butyl tape. Here’s a detailed step-by-step installation process:

    • Before installing the butyl tape, it would be best to chill it by storing it in the fridge for 2-3 hours. This will make it more manageable. This step is optional, but a butyl tape that has been cooled down will be easier to manage and conform.

    • Make sure that the surface where you would be installing the Butyl Tape is clean, dry, and dust-free. Thoroughly dust the area, clean it with an alcohol solution (if applicable) and let it completely dry before applying the tape.

    • Peel the tape from the roll. The tape itself is easy to tear so you shouldn't have any problem. An important note to make, though: make sure to not touch the adhesive side too much as oils from your hands or any other foreign materials can contaminate the adhesive and lessen its bonding strength.

    • Conform the tape with the surface’ texture to eliminate any gaps that may exist between the tape and the surface. The tape is conformable so make sure that you mold and press it against the surface's bumps, curves, and empty areas, covering every possible hole.

    • Roll many layers of the tape to make the butyl patch thicker. This set-up would significantly increase the strength, stability, and air and watertight properties of the application. Eliminate any air bubbles which may exist by applying pressure on the area of application.

    • You can trim any adhesive that oozes out using a plastic knife or any plastic card.

    • Wet your fingers with soapy water (just normal 50-50 mix of water and soap), and rub it on the tape's surface. This will smoothen the butyl rubber, reduce any bumps or lumps, and give your installation a smooth and professional look!
    • Allow the tape to cure, dry, and acclimatize overnight before exposing the surface to any harsh conditions. If this isn't possible, then letting the tape set for at least 3-4 hours would be sufficient.

I see XFasten does not seem to reply to these comments, nor does it reply to e-mail questions in spite of what the auto-reply message says. I submitted an e-mail question on December 5, 2022 and still have not received a reply. There is also no response to Bill – October 25, 2021, above. The question remains… IS YOUR BUTYL TAPE SOLVENT BASED? MaxxFan/MaxxAir specifically says to NOT use products containing solvents.

    Hello? Is anyone there?

    HI!
Will you please tell me if butyl tape will adhere two pieces of canvas to each other?
    Thanks.

Wow, what a revelation! I never would’ve imagined that most high-grade seal tapes can be easily applied on various surfaces without causing any side effect. My basement window needs to be repaired after it got destroyed by a flash flood that filled the area last week. I’ll get in touch with a professional company to help me install the right adhesive later. https://gswrap.com/product-category/tapes/

Hey there. Am wondering if your tape adheres to a water-based latex paint, which I used to paint my plywood camper. Thank you.

Does this tape work as well as the rubber glazing and protection that is often used with window glazing treatments? There are specific parts from https://www.clarkrandp.com/ that can help protect the glass.

    Bill - October 25, 2021

I see a lot of videos where people are using the Butyl tape for sealing around the flange of the Maxx Fan. What kind of base material is this product, solvent, acrylic, etc? The use of a solvent-based sealant will void the warranty on the this fan. I fear a lot of people are being misled. Is your product a silicone or acrylic-based material or do you carry one? I don’t wish to cancel a very good warranty over such a simple mistake.
