How to Declutter Your Home for Spring
Ahh, finally, spring is almost here! And we all know what that means, right? It’s spring cleaning time.
While the thought of cleaning isn’t something that makes us all wide-eyed and bushy-tailed, it’s something that we must do to prepare our homes for the busy months to come.
But you know what? It doesn’t have to be that way anymore! We’ve got a few tips on how you can declutter your home the easy way.
WHY SHOULD YOU DECLUTTER?
We all have the “little things” in our home that we can’t let go of. Whether it’s that old, rusty bicycle on the garage and those little things that we bought just because they’re pretty to look at.
These things add up and eventually, they will take up too much space - leaving you with a home that’s cluttered, disorganized, and just plain messy. And we don’t want to see ourselves being featured on a Hoarders episode, right?
This is where decluttering comes in. You may or may not have heard of the KonMari method. But if you already have and you’ve been wondering what the fuss is all about, we tell you that it will change you, your home, and your life.
No, we’re not even exaggerating at all. Basically, KonMari method is the principle of getting rid of the things that don’t give you joy.
Remember that old, rusty bicycle in your garage? If that doesn’t spark joy when you see it, it’s time to chuck it in the trash.
The same thing goes for old clothes, toys, and other items that you don’t find the need or use anymore. It’s one way of giving your home a breath of fresh air it truly needs.
After you’ve rounded up all the items in your home, develop the “sorting system”. Have boxes for things that you’ll donate, keep, and throw and don’t forget to label them.
If an overstuffed box is an issue, you can secure it with a tape that’s strong enough to take a beating. We recommend the XFasten Filament Duct Tape.
With its high weight holding capacity of 50 kg, it handles overstuffed boxes without the fear of getting it destroyed - even while in transit.
HOW TO GET RID OF YOUR CLUTTER FOR GOOD
Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle
We’ve all heard of the Three R’s of Waste Hierarchy and how it’s supposed to save our environment from climate change.
But what does it have to do with decluttering?
Actually, it has a lot to do with decluttering. In order to truly declutter your home and your life, you have to reduce disposable things such as plastic in your household. Instead, opt for products that are stored in glass containers that you can reuse.
Thoroughly clean these glass containers and you finally have storage for items in your pantry. To make them aesthetically pleasing, you can use a chalkboard tape to label them. Check out the XFasten Chalkboard Tape.
For plastics and papers, put them straight into your recycling bin or bring them to the nearest recycling centers.
Donate or sell the things you don’t need
Earlier, we’ve talked about donating old clothes, toys, and other items that you don’t need or use any longer. Doing this not only helps you free up space in your storage areas, but you can also help people who are in need.
But what if you have bigger and heavier items such as furniture?
Time to hand out those flyers and hold a garage sale! This is also a good way of making some extra cash.
Alternatively, you can also sell items on Craigslist or eBay.
Flat surfaces are not for storage
If you’re struggling with storage space, it’s actually tempting to just put your clutter on flat surfaces such as your dining tables, countertops, and even console tables.
While there’s nothing wrong with it, this clutter can build up over time and it will make any space look too crowded. Keep these clutters out of sight by storing them in your drawers, cabinets, and shelves.
If space is an issue, you can try narrow shelves that you can store beside your fridge. These shelves don’t take too much space and they even have wheels that you can pull out whenever you need to grab something.
Clear your bathroom
We are all guilty of buying too many personal care products that promise us clearer skin, shinier hair, and whiter teeth. But if these products don’t live up to our expectations, more often than not, we forget about them.
We keep them tucked away in the dark, humid confines of our bathroom. Now is the time to throw them away. Do the same thing for products that are way past their expiration dates.
Doing so will save you a lot of time scramming to find the things to help you get ready in the mornings.
Organize your documents
Having a ton of receipts, paper bills, important documents, and notes in your home office is frustrating.
It will take some time, but sorting out all of your paper files is an important step if you want to organize your home office and workspace once and for all.
Review all these documents, and determine which ones you need to toss into the trash bin, file, and tackle on for later.
Once you have the important documents that you need to keep with you, put them in a heavy-duty clear book where you can protect these documents from spills and other elements.
You can even choose to reduce your paper waste by going digital. If possible, request for paperless billing and opt to receive your statement of account via email.
For receipts, scan those if you don’t need physical copies.
Hide your cables and wires
Exposed electrical wirings and cables can be a nightmare to deal with!
But taming them is not rocket science at all. For exposed electrical wirings, hide them using moldings that match the color of your walls.
For cables, you can designate a corner in your home as your charging station. Label these cables, so you won’t be confused as to which cable is for which device.
CONCLUSION
While decluttering your home is a task that involves a lot of patience and of course, effort on your part, nothing still beats the feeling of living in an organized and clutter-free space.
