WHAT IS BUTYL SEALING TAPE USED FOR?
Butyl Sealing Tape is a waterproof vacuum sealing tape that delivers airtight and weatherproof repairs. Because of its malleability, this tape has been widely used for quick repairs at home, automobiles, RVs, roofings, windows, and even boats.
Here are some of the common uses of butyl seal tape:
WHICH IS BETTER: BUTYL TAPE OR SILICONE?
When it comes to finding the right tape for at-home repairs, butyl tapes and silicone tapes are two of the most widely used adhesives that come to mind. But the question all boils down to which is better for the job and which of the two can do it more effectively in the long run.
Silicone Tapes, while readily available and much cheaper than butyl tapes, can pose some disadvantages especially if you’re looking for long-term projects or fixes.
Some silicone tapes can be challenging to remove because of their self-fusing bond. This, in turn, can cause unwanted mess which can be a hassle to those who are looking for a mess-free application solution. They also tend to dry out much quicker than butyl tapes, which can definitely result in lessening their bonding strength over time.
Butyl Tapes, on the other hand, can prove to be a better option because of their flexibility, longevity, and durability. They bond instantly with surfaces compared to silicone tapes, which can take some time to cure.
If you’re deciding whether to use butyl tape or silicone tape, especially for outdoor applications, then butyl tape is a much better option because it can withstand extreme temperatures and even varying weather conditions.
HOW TO USE BUTYL SEAL TAPE?
Like any other adhesives, ensuring the proper installation process is highly essential if you want to fully utilize the strength of butyl tape. Here’s a detailed step-by-step installation process:
- Before installing the butyl tape, it would be best to chill it by storing it in the fridge for 2-3 hours. This will make it more manageable. This step is optional, but a butyl tape that has been cooled down will be easier to manage and conform.
- Make sure that the surface where you would be installing the Butyl Tape is clean, dry, and dust-free. Thoroughly dust the area, clean it with an alcohol solution (if applicable) and let it completely dry before applying the tape.
- Peel the tape from the roll. The tape itself is easy to tear so you shouldn't have any problem. An important note to make, though: make sure to not touch the adhesive side too much as oils from your hands or any other foreign materials can contaminate the adhesive and lessen its bonding strength.
- Conform the tape with the surface’s texture to eliminate any gaps that may exist between the tape and the surface. The tape is conformable so make sure that you mold and press it against the surface's bumps, curves, and empty areas, covering every possible hole.
- Roll many layers of the tape to make the butyl patch thicker. This setup would significantly increase the strength, stability, and air and watertight properties of the application. Eliminate any air bubbles which may exist by applying pressure on the area of application.
- You can trim any adhesive that oozes out using a plastic knife or any plastic card.
- Wet your fingers with soapy water (just a normal 50-50 mix of water and soap), and rub it on the tape's surface. This will smoothen the butyl rubber, reduce any bumps or lumps, and give your installation a smooth and professional look!
- Allow the tape to cure, dry, and acclimatize overnight before exposing the surface to any harsh conditions. If this isn't possible, then letting the tape set for at least 3-4 hours would be sufficient.
IS BUTYL TAPE HARD TO REMOVE?
Butyl Tape removal is a process that might take some time and patience. Here are some tips on how to ensure success in removing this tape on a surface:
- Take a putty knife and carefully scrape one edge of the tape to fit the putty knife underneath.
- Next, you’ll need a washcloth. Dip it in hot, soapy water for a few minutes.
- You’ll want to remove the washcloth after some time, but wring it out only slightly so as not to dry out the soap-water mixture.
- Apply the cloth to the section/s that you want to remove.
- Let the cloth sit for a while for at least 15-30 minutes to loosen the adhesive.
HOW LONG DOES BUTYL TAPE LAST?
Storage plays one of the key factors in making sure that your butyl tape lasts for a long time. Although butyl tape has extreme temperature resistance, keeping it in a cold room will prevent it from oozing out. It is recommended to store the roll in the fridge for at least 2-6 hours before using it for the best results.
